About the Book

Two Wrongs Make a Vice is your book. Over the months it was written, the sense of urgency grew and grew. The New Recession took hold of the college graduate’s job market, hearts were broken over the internet, and we began to truly redefine what growing up means. Current events have always shaped landscapes…eroded away old notions and replaced them with new perspectives. New York City had seen its eyebrows furrow and pace begin to quicken. This novel extended its reach and attempted to encapsulate all of this.

The nameless protagonist is all of us. As an anonymous male, progressing from 6th grade all the way up through college graduation, he experiences a changing social climate and is thrown headfirst into the choppy post-college world. The novel takes place in the fictional Northeast, from Upstate New York by way of New Jersey and, finally, ending up in New York City.

The plot points are placed like a board game. The secondary characters, as they are introduced and as they progress, all leave a permanent, memorable mark. From relationships that never work out, to friendships forged and tested, the story hits its marks like a heartbeat: evenly and essentially.

Music, as it does for all of us, plays an important role in the psyche of the main character. While learning that lives are not song lyrics, the protagonist moves from scene to scene, including indie, Emo, and folk rock. The music evolves with the story, finally culminating in the fact that the most important lyrics and songs are the ones we have the courage to write…forged out of the memories we’d be hard-pressed to forget.

In many ways, Two Wrongs Make a Vice is a self-reflexive examination of the writing process itself. The main character, in a struggle against the horror of forgetting important moments in his life, begins to write. His writing process is exhausting and difficult and is captured, in all essence, within the pages of Two Wrongs. The fear of forgetting our youth is the underlying element that drives the novel forward.

Growing up and finding legs to stand on has always been a difficult and daunting undertaking. Young people today, as they have in the past, confront challenges that are large, complex, and personal. Today, youth is particularly awkward; interactions have become more distant; relationships are created in new ways. What never changes are the expectations the world has for the generation of right now. They are struggling to answer the call, any way they can.
